New Latin poetry is the heart of VATES. Whoever you are, you are welcome to send something.
Who can contribute?
Anyone, from university professors to students, to armchair classicists. Veteran versifiers or absolute beginners. Quantitative classical verse and accentual (rhythmic) or other verse forms (e.g. song lyrics) are all considered for inclusion.
What we are looking for
From the ‘Notes for Future Contributors’ in Issue 15 (p. 146), Vates is interested in:
- new Latin poetry;
- reviews of contemporary Latin verse;
- short articles on Neo-Latin verse (of any period from the Renaissance onwards);
- very short pieces (150–350 words) on ‘What excites me’ about reading Latin poetry of any period;
- contributions for a Vates teaching anthology, as discussed in the introduction to Issue 15.
What to send with a poem
- A translation (essential) — featured Latin poems are accompanied by English translations.
- A brief note on the metrical form (essential).
- A brief introduction and endnotes to explain any details that may help readers (both optional).
- A short biographical note on yourself (two or three lines will suffice).
Poems that have already appeared on the internet — on Facebook, X / Twitter or private websites — are in general still eligible; Vates aims to focus on previously unpublished verse in the sense of formal publication. Latin spelling is up to you (‘whatever you are happy with’).
