About the book

“This book is an entirely miscellaneous collection of new Latin poems written in the early years of the 21st century by a highly diverse group of poets whose shared passion for producing Latin poetry is their only unifying characteristic.” The contributions are drawn predominantly from the pages of Vates: The Journal of New Latin Poetry, a free online publication founded in 2010.

The entries are arranged alphabetically by author. Each follows the format of the journal: introductory comments from the poet, then the Latin text and an English translation. Some poems are translations, many are original; some are in classical quantitative verse, some in rhythmic and rhyming medieval forms, others in moulds such as the haiku or the quincouplet.

As the editor writes in his introduction: “All the contributors give their work to Vates freely, and the same is true for this Anthology.”
